Maybe not top of mind for many, but rugby is a club sport that operates almost like they're a varsity enterprise these days.  They've made huge strides the last few years behind new coach Dave Chapman & have just finished competing in a national tournament in Las Vegas where they played some of the best teams in the country.  Following is my recap of the last couple of days, the team represented very well and should be set up for a very strong spring.  We will be at Stony Brook April 2 and hosting a tournament at CU April 9... fans are more than welcome at both events!

Season is underway!  If you're not following on social media they are at a tournament in Vegas as we speak.  A quick recap:

Thursday:  round robin play.  Went up a score in their first match vs. Air Force, then watched the Cadets blow past our guys in a 30-ish to 5 rout.  Inside intel says they were a little tight & rusty having not played prior (and knowing AF was good).  They bounced back with an upset victory over Delaware, then rounded out Day 1 by spanking the Citadel.  3 teams ended up 2-1 (Citadel lost all their games), and in the tiebreaker we came in 3rd.  Still, pretty good vs. 2 miltary schools & one big state school full of dopes!

Friday:  Knockout tournament put into brackets based on first day's play.  We  started as the #5 seed & beat St Joseph's (#4 seed) in the first game.  In the semis took down Northeastern reasonably easily, setting up a final vs. Colorado that went back & forth and ultimately to sudden death OT.  We lost in OT, but the fact that we're playing CU even is pretty awesome!

The same could be said for the women's rugby team this season, which lost a heartbreaker in the national title game!  It gets little fanfare or recognition, but not surprised.  The only acknowledgement that the football team played in the 2003 title game is a pathetic paint job on our faded scoreboard.

At the time I was not aware, but had contacted the athletic dept. to ask why rugby was not promoted more through their communications offices.  Was told that as a club sport it does not have that same affiliation with DI athletics; therefore there are no links on the athletics page, which is too bad.  It definitely under-exposes both men's and women's rugby clubs.

The 1st ever Colgate rugby 7's tournament happened last weekend on Andy Kerr field and was a huge success.  Lots of parents and rugby alums on campus turned the event into a mini-reunion that was a lot of fun.  Many thanks to Coach Hunt and the football team for moving their practice to early in the AM so rugby could have the field for most of the day!

The write-up of the weekend is at the link below if you'd like a full recap, suffice to say our team is playing great and has now lost in two tournament finals to nationally ranked teams after pounding all the other teams in our conference.  Was great to see them blast Syracuse last Saturday!  Next up is the Kutztown tournament on the 23rd (no tournament this Saturday, ruggers stay on campus for Spring Party Weekend), where hopefully we can translate further success into an invite to Nationals in May.

This is another success story: Andy Waeger hires an assistant of the caliber of Deirdre Freeman Huff to his swimming and diving program:
