So what's on peoples' minds these days re our Colgate that isn't of an athletic nature. Thoughts on fraternities/sororities, faculty, Art Center downtown, recent admits, college rankings, cost of a Colgate education, the new Pres to be... Let's hear it. I always felt the Voy site never had much discussion related to the Univ other than how Langdon (RIP) ruined our football program...I have DKE friends who haven't given the school a cent since it was thrown off campus and as a KDR I look at my beautiful house sitting there idle for almost a decade due to a few young men's poor judgment and scratch my head...there has to be a better alternative!

Hoping new prez Casey will change the atmosphere on campus, which I think right now is pretty toxic.  Students and faculty don't trust the administration and as an alum I certainly don't want Suzy Nelson or Scott Brown making any decisions of importance.  Herbst never connected with any constituency... faculty, student, or alumni... and his lack of leadership is very evident in this bridge year where as far as I can tell the administration is dysfunctional.

In contrast I've only heard positives from those who know Casey, which includes an influential DePauw alum and a parent who has kids at both DePauw and Colgate.  He has an athletic background, a history of working with greek organizations rather than trying to bury them, and seems beloved by both students and faculty.  Really hoping he's a home run, as we've always had to overcome our administrative leadership rather than being able to support it.  Wouldn't it be nice to be on the same page with our on-campus leaders for a change?  Here's to hoping!

I couldn't agree with you more about getting the Pres and students/athletes on the same page. Although I really liked Rebecca and felt her enthusiasm and leadership style were great while she was here, she still wasn't a former athlete so couldn't fully appreciate what it takes to play a varsity sport at Colgate while competing successfully in class. It's a big deal. What I've read has impressed me about Casey. I have my fingers crossed as well but have a good feeling. I've known some on the search group for a long time and know how important getting the right chemistry at the top was to them.  Patriot League schools are unique unto themselves and Presidents have to be people who embrace that uniqueness rather than try to change it...

Rumor has it that the Beta house may be shut down during the spring semester due to an accusation of pledging misconduct, by an unknown individual. Suzy Nelson was thought to have wanted to close down the house for a longer period of time - as was the National - but some influence with the BOT has apparently shortened the sentence. Anyone who knows more about this matter, please chime in.

So I serve on the Beta alumni board hence the earlier comment about Suzy & Scott, who I view to be lazy (Suzy) and incompetent (Scott).  The charges were for hazing, not pledge misconduct.

I'd prefer not to go into details of the case other than to say no court in the land would have taken the university's case seriously, and it's pretty shameful that students at Colgate can be convicted solely based on an anonymous third party complaint.  Yes, the punishment could have been much more severe... but by the end of the semester I think even the admins realized they had gone too far and backed off their original intentions.  Really poorly done by the school, and one of my principal reasons for wanting new prez Casey here tomorrow.

First, a BIG WELCOME to President Brian Casey, who will be at the helm for our carbon-neutral, bicentennial in 2019!  He stayed at DePauw for 8 years; the going rate for college presidents is about five.  Guess we'll see how he feels about rural, upstate NY soon enough.  His inauguration is set for Sept. 30.

This year's admission report is out for the Class of 2020:

2018 - 8713/2224/26%
2019 - 8722/2380/27.3%
2020 - 8394/2410/28.7%

Colgate attracts smart, diverse, successful students, but the stats are not as competitive with peer schools, where 'Gate always seems to be lagging behind.  Would like to see these numbers improve with President Casey.
