Hello all, my name is Risley Lesko, and I'll be taking over for Kyle keeping you guys updated on the Colgate football program for the upcoming season. You may recognize my name as the Uplifting Athletes chapter president from this past season, or else just from being wide receiver number 23 out on the field. I know we have a lot of time to cover in this first email. I'll try and be as succinct as I can.

Our offseason started with morning runs, which went great. Coach Helsel put a lot of emphasis on explosive training, as well as implementing more variation to the morning runs. Doing alternating exercises in the mornings as opposed to the same exercise stations every time really helped break up the grind of morning runs, and also made sure we worked a wider array of muscle groups in the workouts. We had a learning moment when, in our last workout right before spring break, we were really dragging. Coach called us in after the workout and announced we'd have one more morning run on Monday morning coming back from Spring Break. The team responded great, with everyone showing up, not complaining, and having a great workout. Resilience like that will really serve us well going into next season.

Spring Ball went very well, with improvements across the board. Obviously the big battle is for the unenviable position as Jake's replacement at quarterback, with the front runners at this point Sage Atwood and Carmine Scarfone. Both quarterbacks improved so much during spring ball that it was almost impossible to recognize them if you compare film of the first and last practices. Sage brings poise, decision making, and an accurate arm, while Carmine is more of a raw athlete, though as I said he improved greatly over the spring in all aspects of his game. The competition will have to be ongoing, and likely will not be decided until a week or two into camp. I'll keep you guys posted.

Another position where we lost a few seniors is d line, with all league guys Vic Steffen and Alex Campbell graduating. However, Pat Afriye looks as dominant as ever and ready to follow up his All American year, and guys like Caleb Fell and Connor Buck look ready to step up and take a bigger role in the defense. Linebacker's another position where we lost a lot of talent, with Kyle, Chuck, and C Mo graduating. However, just like with the d line, we have a stable of guys like Dillon Deluliis, TJ Holl, and Nick Ionelli ready to take on huge roles in the defense, with Dillon having an especially good spring. He's a guy to be sure to watch out for next year. He's a playmaking machine.

Our defensive backfield is looking good, only having to replace Joey Fig at safety. Luckily, we have a guy like Ben Hunt who already has a ton of game experience coming in as the projected starter for next year. Alec Wisniewski, Courtney Mimms, Abu Daramy and Ty Castillo look to pick up where they left off, all as potential all-league candidates. Keyon is also going to try to play both sides of the ball next year, so watch out for that.

Offensively, other than the Quarterback position, we return a ton of experienced players. At receiver, even after John Maddeluna leaving, we have guys like Thomas Ives, Owen Rockett, and Alex Greenawalt all coming in with all-league talent. A lesser known guy that could play a lot next year is Owen Buscaglia, who had a great spring. At running back we're going to have a stable of great backs, headed up by a healthy James Holland. Keyon will look to add on to the great year he had last year. Also, Alex Matthews is another kid who improved a ton over the spring and should contribute a bunch next year.

The offensive line looks to replace guys like Jordi Dalmau, Grant Siegal, and Zach Provin. However, guys like Louie Berkowitz had really good springs, and across the board we had really consistent line play. We also have a couple studs in this year's recruiting class that should come in and start competing for a job immediately.

On special teams replacing perennial all-league kicker Jonah Bowman will be tough, but Chris Puzzi had a great spring, and showed that he has a huge leg. Josh Cerra continues to improve at punter and should compete for all league next year.

Ok. Phew. I think you guys are caught up. Going forward, we're just starting our summer workouts and kids will start showing up in Hamilton to work Reunion weekend in a week or two. Another aspect of the program that we've really been emphasizing for the past few years is getting kids up for the summer, and I'm proud to say that just glancing at the housing document that we have, it looks like most kids on the team will be in Hamilton for at least a stretch. As you guys know, it's harder for us to come back as there are no summer classes at Colgate, so our scholarships don't cover our housing or meals. The fact that so many kids are coming back just shows how hungry everyone is to crush it next year, starting with Cal Poly on national television.

I'll hit you guys up with an update around mid summer, definitely before we report for camp in late July. Feel free to hit me back if any of you have any questions or just want to talk ball.  It's really an honor to talk to you guys, and I know you've all individually made huge contributions to Colgate football, whether on the field, off the field, or both.

Dear Friends of Colgate Football:

Finals are over, torchlight and graduation concluded and it is now summer in Hamilton. Besides having plenty of parking spaces, it also means that our crew of players who spend the summer here training are starting to return.

The usual starting point for players to return this summer is to work at Reunion. For those of you coming back to campus this weekend, I encourage you to get to know our players who will be manning the tents. They are a great group of young men and they will make you proud to be from Colgate.

Another part of Reunion 2017 I want to make sure you are aware of is the Football Reception at my home (51 Payne Street) on Saturday, June 3, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

It's a short walk from campus and shuttle service also is available from Reunion Headquarters. It will be a chance to grab a beer, eat some food and have some laughs. I hope to see everyone who comes back to campus - please stop by.

To fill out your afternoon, plan to stop by the Varsity Athletics Alumni Gathering, hosted by Vicky Chun '91, MA'94. This will be held at Whitnall Field until 5 p.m.

The locker room renovation project is moving along quickly. As we remodel the area, we have a couple of items we think alumni will be interested in. We have two signs that hung in the locker room area that I would love to see go to a member of the Colgate Football family. They will be available to view at my home at the Reunion Reception. Anyone interested in purchasing either one can bid "action style" if we have more than one taker. All proceeds will go to the Maroon Council of course. Photos of the items are attached to this email.

In addition, we are in the middle of replacing the Crown Field playing surface at Andy Kerr Stadium. I've included a photo with the newsletter and can't wait for you to see the finished product in person. This is something our administration took on as a top priority for this season and we know we will be very pleased with the end result. We already have a terrific home schedule for 2017. Now we have an amazing new playing field to showcase Colgate Football.

A few reminders I'd like to share with you:
Registration for the Dunlap Golf Classic, Aug. 18-19, is open. We hope you will consider joining 'Gate Football alums from all years. Registration is available here:DunlapGolf17
VIP Parking passes (Lot #1 behind home stands) for the 2017 season go on sale Aug. 1. There is a limited supply, available on a first-come basis by calling the Colgate Ticket Office at 315-228-4062 on or after Aug. 1.
Saturday, Oct. 7, vs. Lehigh we will be welcoming back members of the 1977 team that went 10-1 and was named ECAC team of the year, and the 1997 squad that was the first Colgate football team to win the Patriot League Championship. There will be a pregame tailgate and more information to follow! All are invited to attend.
We are looking for Maroon Mentor volunteers to match up with our incoming class this fall. If interested, please contact Debbie Rhyde at
One final piece of business, we have completed our staff with the hiring of Ben Olson, who will be coaching the outside linebackers. Ben comes to us from Syracuse University, where he assisted on the defense and worked with the special teams. Ben came highly recommended and was incredible when he came to campus to interview. We are very lucky to have him, and I know you will like him when you meet him.

That's about it from here, I look forward to Reunion and catching up with all who return to Hamilton. Be sure and say hello to the coaches. You won't have to twist their arms to get them to join you in your tent!

Go 'gate!
