2015-16 Mens Hockey

What do posters think will be the outcome of the 2015-16 hockey season? After being swept by Cornell, having losses to Q-Paq and Yale, can this team make a run in the second half? Can we secure a home playoff spot in the league standings- #5 - #8? Can we make it to LP again, and possibly have a championship season and go to the NCAAs? We've lost two key players to the pros and have a short bench; things are not looking good right now. Can we turn it around? Comments?
Tunkmaster

It's difficult to be optimistic. We're currently tied for 10th in the league. Our offense is eleventh in goals per game. Defensively, we are not good. Eleventh in goals against per game (we give up 3 goals/game and score 1.5 goals a game). The PPK is tenth and the team save percentage is ninth. Then again, remember 2011 when we were last in the regular season and made it to the semis.
Gate'83

Folks who are closer to the team than I am (been preoccupied with football up until now!) tell me the team is paper thin and has had injuries that they just don't have the depth to recover from.  Hopefully the break helps that... and Finn starts stopping some pucks.  I've also heard he's given up a number of very soft goals, which is uncharacteristic.

I assume once Zappa figures out the new board he'll have an opinion!

Games with Brown on Tuesday (12/29) and Vermont on Wednesday at Burlington in the Catamount Classic. This is one of maybe 8 meetings with Brown this season. We need retribution for our loss in Ireland.

Horrific 7-5 loss today vs. Bruno. Don't know what we have to do to get a W. Really painting ourselves in a corner.

Terrible loss.  I cannot take another year of Finn.  I just can't.  He needs to be the QB of our team and he has proven to be, um, ineffective.  Five goals should win a game.  True to form, 'Gate gives up 2 late goals at the end of the 1st and 3rd to lose in sad fashion.  Lappin scores 4?  There is absolutely NO excuse not to defend him.  You'd think he was a rookie we've never heard of before...a sad commentary considering this is our 3rd game against the Bears this season.

The holiday break yielded no improvements, and even Dauda's tally won't change that in the long run.  Nothing wrong with having a rebuilding year, but it's a disappointing contrast from last season.  Four years of playoffs in Atlantic City & Lake Placid are great accomplishments, but no hardware to show for it is unfortunate.

And now we're at the bottom of the barrel all over again Sad  Hope the guys can still enjoy themselves and get a few in the W column.

4-1 L tonight. Is the team toast this year? It sure looks like it. Something's not right, but who knows what's going on? Just a terrible showing in VT.....and Ireland.
The Lone Haranguer

Since when has a goalie ever been the "quarterback" of a hockey team? Finn isn't the main problem here; the defense is. Watching the puck too much instead of marking their man in the D zone. Combine that with being outshot by almost 100 shots so far this season and we're going to be in trouble.
Gate Raider

Apparently, good seasons didn't produce good recruits.  Why not?
go'gate

The team is only as good as its goalie.  Agree the defense is anemic, but the last goal he let in v. Brown with :47 in the game is the epitome of his performance this season.  Give Racine a chance to reignite the D.  Like the team has anything left to lose?  We just lost to 3-8-3 Brown and 7-12-2 Vermont.  I'm sure 4-11-4 Maine will give us fits.  It's due or die before league play resumes.  Changing strategies, players or positions is smart, not desperate.
60salum

I would expect to see a lot of changes in the Maine games. These are OOC games so it's a good chance to put Racine in and see what he can do. Also juggling the lines would be a good idea. Maybe the time off would give Finn a chance to rethink how he's approaching the game.

Well I am quoting myself here, but it got the job done!  Hamilton from Hamilton lol...congrats on getting a much needed victory.  Vaughan's decision should be no disrespect to Finn.  We also fare much better when a Spink or two tallies a point!  I don't think Maine is the best measure for success being closer to the bottom of the PWR than we are, but any change in strategy that combines with a win could inspire and motivate everyone.  This coming from someone who wrote off the season months ago Wink

We're the lowest ECAC team in the PWR...don't recall the last time we were 46/60.  Nowhere to go but up.

Beat Union & RPI!
Gate'83

1 down, 1 to go!  Didn't watch since it was a ppv, but nice to see the squad rebound from a deficit... and for Finn to have a good game (from the stats).  Time for a sweep!
go'gate

After the split at hapless Maine last weekend and a game against an uptick Union squad, I was doubtful.  Glad we got, at the least, a split on the road, which is a common goal for any team.

From the TimesUnion:
Raiders goaltender Charlie Finn finished with 30 saves but battled the puck for most of the game's first 40 minutes.  Finn had trouble controlling rebounds and keeping a glove on the puck but Union could not capitalize on loose pucks near the goal crease.

Everyone is quick to say our defense leaves Finn out to dry; there are definitely other factors such as those listed in the article that I agree with on any given night.

RPI & Kasdorf stole one from #7 Cornell...

Three pt weekend after the tie with RPI Last night. All in all a positive weekend with Hamilton playing great in goal and Hunter Racine showing a scoring touch. Next comes Harvard-Dartmouth, always a huge weekend series, and more so this year with Harvard ranked way up there. If Finn/Hamilton can get hot we have a good chance against both teams. We'll go as far as our defense lets us.

Fantastic weekend and a small tide has changed.  Only surrendering 4 goals in 2 games; kudos to Hamilton & Co.

Next weekend will be, in a word, tough!  Great to see Harrison, Racine and Dauda put on a show!  Are the Spinks on the same line?  Sometimes it's do or die with them.

Yes, I believe the Spinks are on the same line. Putting the two together generates great offense, and is better than splitting them up.

Harvard will be tough with Jimmy Vesey, one of the top players in the country. Last I looked they were ranked #7 nationally. Hope Cornell takes the punch out of Dartmouth so at least we can get 2 pts on the weekend.
go'gate

I have absolutely no confidence that we can stop Vesey; we couldn't stop him in Lake Placid last year where he scored 2 goals in the title game.  We also couldn't stop Lappin from Brown, and we had 3 cracks at him.  He scored a goal in game 1, 3 assists in game 2, and a hat trick and 2 assists in game 3.  Give me a break.

Very happy with the tie at RPI, but they were without their leading scorer (Bourbonnais or Prapavessis, not sure which).  Can only imagine what it could have been, but lots of credit to the Raiders, which are no pushover.

Harvard with a good pp; our discipline has been terrific and need to stay out of the box or it's lights out.  Personally, would like to roll the dice and see Hamilton start in net.
60salum

We played a good game last night, but Vesey scored for Harvard and that's never good for the Raiders. While the score was 4-2 it really was 3-2 (ENG) and we didn't look bad. Had an almost breakaway and hit a post, we seemed to have some good opportunities, just couldn't make it happen. One penalty and they score. That's why they are ranked in the top 10. We have to play perfectly to win this season.
go'gate

Agree, we looked pretty good against one of the fastest, ranked teams in the nation.  Some of my points held true.  We are always good at giving up early and late goals, and playing from behind is never a strength.  Hope we can get the split at home against Dartmouth.  Feels like we're on life support in 8th place.

Can't we just concede the Whitelaw to Qpac?  And give the #2 and #3 seeds to Harvard or RPI while the rest of us fight it out  Wink

This season has lost its luster.  So many sweet tournament appearances for the Raiders and some thrilling victories over the last 5 years, but...
Gate'83

First time seeing the team in person last night since the end of football season (and was admittedly not paying much attention to hockey last fall).  Was good to see Zappa in the stands!  I'd agree that as losses go this wasn't bad... Crimson spanked us worse last year, and clearly had the better athletes last night.

It's an interesting contrast to football, where even when we were losing early in the year you could see the potential... here, not so much.  Seniors seem to have plateaued & the bench is short.  Hoping for a better result tonight...

Swept over the weekend. D'mouth had speed and finese; clearly a very talented team that should go far. We need to break out of our zone faster and get that pass to the Spinks of whoever is at mid-ice. We accomplished that several times last night and it put pressure on the Green, but just could not get the clear breakaways to score. Got some nifty dirty goals in the first; devastating to give up that 2-0 lead. Frosh showing some promise; need them to mature in a hurry if we are to go anywhere in the playoffs.
go'gate

Not holding out much hope this weekend in the North Country, though we have had success at Cheel.  Raiders haven't strung together much consistency but hoping for a split.

Pics have probably been viewed by now, but here's a link to the updated arena:

We're snakebit. Can't catch a break. A 3-2 loss (plus ENG). Aside from sleepwalking through the first period we brought a lot of energy to the game. We owned the second period, and it was back and forth in the 3rd. Outshot the Larries - in fact doubled their shot total. Finn played well in net, and we had several good opportunities but just couldn't get the puck to cooperate.

Rolling 3 lines is hurting us majorly; we just run out of gas against these teams in the 3rd period. There is only so much you can ask these players to do. They are trying hard and giving it their best, but things don't look good for the rest of the schedule with Q-Pac and Dartmouth coming up. Our fortunes in the post-season, if we are in the 9-12 group, will be an uphill fight.

Hopefully we can get a break and win a few road games the rest of February. Our home/road schedule has been frightful this season.
go'gate

It's more than rolling 3 lines that's the problem...it's Finn's Five Hole.  Hamilton gives up 2 and gets pulled; Finn gives up 2 and he's a God.  I don't get it and can't wait for him to graduate.

Coach Vaughan's comments:
"We had a slow start. They came at us really hard in the first after the initial power play where we had some good looks. You have to give them credit. They were feeding off the emotion in the building."

The emotion in the building was not a well-kept secret.  This was a nationally-televised game.  They had planned a "white-out" event.  This is SLUs premier sport.  Kind of a lame excuse IMO.  We didn't show up to play, dug ourselves a hole, and neither Spink lit the lamp.  Do the math.

Congrats to McGuire; 44 SOG with 3 lines is terrific, but wonder why that pressure hasn't happened much before.  No consistency.
Gate'83

I was at the game, the Hamilton goals were bad... as in really bad.  Not his night, move on to the next one.
go'gate

His goals didn't look great on tv, either, just want to give the kid a chance.  We have nothing to lose...like we have been doing.

What can be learned:

SLU
We give up a goal 3:30 into the first period; another 3 min later.  Not a strong start.
We give up a ppg with 1:30 remaining in the second.  Not a strong end.

Clarkson
We give up a ppg to Clarkson 3 min into the first period.  Not a strong start.
We give up a ppg to Clarkson with :16 remaining in the second.  Not a strong end.

I'd say playing with a short bench makes it more critical to stay out of the box; 8 penalties = 16 minutes of man down and many tired legs.  Within 24 hours, we cut our offense in half from 44 shots to 22.  Amarosa also had the GWG in OT against Cornell...'nuf said.

Four of our last 7 are against ranked teams.  We're currently tied for 11th with the Tigers, but Princeton has a game in hand.  We're looking at a tiebreaker with last place Brown...and we all know where the chips fall on that one!

Can't believe the season has unfolded the way it has.  Can anyone give specifics as to who is sidelined, and why?  Not feeling much of a positive impact from Pagliero yet.
60salum

Ornarily I'd say this is at least a 2-point weekend. But with us tied with Princeton, and playing at Hobey Baker, it gives me pause. Not entirely sure we can beat the Tigers. If anything we are about equal, as we are in the standings. It will be tough going up against the Colgate 2.0 coaching staff.

As for facing Q-Pac on Saturday: what are our chances against the #1 team in the country? I'd say nil. All we can do is try to frustrate them, and if the team plays their best game - which they have shown flashes of this season, although not consistently - maybe we can keep it a low scoring affair, (if Finn is on his game).

Hope the guys hang in there and keep us from finishing in the cellar. It would be nice to make our last two games at Starr wins over RPI and Union.
Gate Raider

I gave up on M hockey around Dec. 1st when they didn't play at home for about 2 months.  I've just about forgot they have a team.

Small inset article about last game at Starr in NYHJ Online.  Didn't realize our record was that good since 'we opened there in 59!

The best contrarian indicator that I've seen on the board for quite some time!!

Nice 5-4 comeback win over the Tigers last night. The guys were down but not out - good to see. Showed a lot of fight and determination. Got to cut the penalties though - the PK is beginning to kill us. Huge game on Sat. vs. Q-Pac ranked #1. Hope for a good showing.
Gate Raider

Colgate 3 - Quinnipiac 6.  Hockey team should have stayed in Ireland.  Maybe the coach has become too comfortable in his job.  Waiting for Raider Archivist's optimistic and indefensible view of the future of the program.  Are there five outstanding recruits coming in?
