First half of games and general underachieving

Bad southern trip and bad game tonight when it comes to beginning play prepared. That falls on the coaches. Last 2 seasons a step forward and now a step back. Recruiting just ok, no good bigs ever (try New Zealand) and lathargic play from guys who had improved only to fall back. Come on Gate!!!
Go...'gate

They really seem to be struggling now and I don't know if a lot of improvement can be projected in conference play.  I hope I am wrong.
Steve

Freshman Will Rayman with 34 points, a record that beats that of Adonal Foyle, in 10 point road victory over Lafayette!

Thanks Coach Langel, your coaches and team.

Go 'gate!

Excellent game, the entire team played well and with confidence! Could be a fun season as we continue to see who will shine next.Very Happy

The team played smart ball and Rayman is something else.  Go Gate!

PL record is 1-0.....the only record that matters right now. Go 'gate!

Sorry, but when are we going to address the real issue?  Langel is not the answer.  He has shown that he cannot build a team that can complete in the league.  Time to give someone else a go.

Glad there is some interest in hoops. I expected better, but I have concluded it's a lack of talent. Why? That's not an easy answer. I have watched nearly every game this year in person or on tv. Langel is not the answer? Who is? Langel and staff are giving their all. Watch them during games. They coach.  I'm not sure the players are comprehending. Or capable. Apparently  Krmpotich is gone and I suspect there might be other players who can't or won't put forth the effort Langel and staff demand. Maybe the coaches aren't selling 'gate to recruits. Regardless, let's give Langel and staff support and resources to turn this around. Go 'gate!
Gate08

I'm a hoops fan too and have watched most the games this year and it is easy to blame "lack of talent," but ultimately it is Langel's job to recruit players he can develop.  Any school offering full rides should be able to bring in players that can eventually compete as this level.  Where are all the players he developed?  Losing to some of these schools is embarrassing.  Langel will probably be around for a while but if Gate was serious about producing a winner, they'd ditch him...

Matt signed a contract extension last year at the same time they let Nicci go, he's here for another 3 seasons minimum.  We also finished near the top of the league the last couple of years and have won a few games in the PL tournament (I think, not looking up the stats).  This year we also graduated our best player in Tillotson who I'd say developed significantly on Matt's watch.

So yes, I'm not happy with the results this year but "change the coach!" every time a team has a down year isn't particularly realistic, especially when you're dealing with a sport like hoop where we're a traditional doormat.  I actually liked Emmett a lot & thought he got a raw deal on the way out of town... but that's not Matt's fault, and he has had the team playing competitively the last few years.  Here's to hoping he gets us back there!

Nice win for the team tonight!  Down big early, found their rhythm & led throughout the 2nd half.  Got close at the end, but they got a big stop & then made their foul shots in the last minute.  It's a good win against a BU team tied w/ Bucknell for first in the PL.

Announcers pointed out 4 of our 5 wins so far have come on the road, here's to hoping that trend starts to reverse with our next two games at home...

Another win.   Tears in my eyes.

Another losing season for men's hoops. Looking for anything positive in this gloomy season, I thought the team would go all out against lowly LaF to earn a .500 PL season.  Nope. Down immediately 7-0. Too many times the team has allowed opponents to rack up points (once down 17-0 earlier this year) before we score a single point. I remain loyal to these coaches (who else would want the job?), but repeatedly allowing a team to sleepwalk into the start of a game, repeatedly having to claw back, and then run out of gas at the end, is on them. The coaches simply have to do a better job of preparation. I'm on their side, but I expect more. That said....go 'gate!
Gate'83

Was at the game yesterday and like Critic was disappointed in the start... and really in the whole game.  The team had played much better the second half of the year but yesterday looked like they were sleepwalking, easy baskets all over the place for a pretty bad Lafayette team.  Doesn't get any easier as we draw Lehigh in the playoffs... and they've hammered us twice already this year.

From what I hear we've got a pretty good point guard prospect coming next year and pretty much the whole team comes back.  Look forward to seeing Rayman next year after an offseason in the weight room!  So not much optimism for this coming Thursday, but think we'll be very competitive next year...
Oldtimer

We need a big. i.e.,  6' 9-10" 230 lb athletic, "no fear" power forward who can rebound and not foul out. Our biggest guys either shoot from the outside with little success or don't have the heft to bang with the league's better forwards/centers. Let's get some size but it has to be athletic from the get go and not a "project". A bit like Rayman but with 20-30 more lbs on him...and able to score 10-15 points a game. Point guards and skinny forwards are all we seem to be able to attract...
Critic

Big, tough forwards? I agree and the guys who come to mind used to come here.....McMullen most recently. Tim Bollin, Pat Campolieta, and Burnatowski also come to mind. Tough, tough players. And I don't believe they needed to be told to bulk up and/or hit the weights. How to get players of that size and mentally to choose 'gate? I trust someone has the answer.
Gate'83

Take a look at our stats page, you'll see that while our opponents shoot a little better than we do, rebounding is almost exactly even and assists are dead even.  Where we get completely outperformed is in turnovers and steals, which to me makes point guard our #1 priority.  Last year with Tillotson our turnover & steal #'s were much better, as a basis for comparison.

So sure, I'll take another big guy to pair with Regisford (who's pretty good in that area) but without better ball security we're not going anywhere...

Langel has done better with this program than any coach in recent memory.  Tough to recruit with poor facilities, student apathy and a very rural campus.
Langel has done well with little to offer.
Steve

Not sure how this view suits me. So for what it's worth, of course Coach Langel has achieved a lot in his time but let's not throw out the baby...

Colgate is certainly not alone with diminished student attendance at D1 schools with both football and basketball versus 20+ years ago. And of course Colgate has always had smaller crowds than schools in less rural areas.

But what is it that draws students (first) and basketball players (second) to Colgate? It's the same recipe that applies to football. It's the coaches and the
academic program and career outcomes, bolstered in the past 20 years by the PL's focus and more recently athletic scholarships. Oh, and let's not forget the athletic support staff  and the Mark P. Buttitta '74 Varsity Fitness Center. Other than the academies, what PL school has anything approaching it?

We have all heard basketball and football player alumni say as much over the years. They are an inspiration.

Go 'gate!
CR(colorlessraider)

Sloppy end to the first half

Stupid turnovers.  30 was guilty 2-3 times in last two minutes!
