Fordham

Game notes: http://gocolgateraiders.com.s3.am...olgate_FB_Game_Notes_Fordham_.pdf

Castillo is back based on the chart, didn't pick it apart any more than that.

Should be an interesting game between the two "next best" teams in the league this year.  I'd like to beat the Rams & then play for 6-4... but if we don't win, is it then time to play the kids?

If we are way behind or way ahead, it would be nice to give the backup QBs some playing time. This is something Coach Hunt has shied away from, but it needs to be done.
The Future

Agreed about giving backup QB's some time. But a bit tricky about when to put them in after giving up 20 point lead to Cornell with three minutes left in 3rd--and some of the other close wins from the past few years.

Colgate with #4 rushing D and #120 passing D in FCS. Will need both to play well against very good Fordham offense.

Wilkins looked great against HC. Hard not to wonder what could have been with him minus leg problems.

Wisniewski really blowing people up on D. Think he will be a very good player for the next few years.

A shame that this team doesn't have an 11th game. A win against Bryant and finishing 7-4 would still probably have them outside looking in for playoffs--but they'd have a shot. Hopefully they are able to find an 11th game for next year.

6-4 would still be a very good season (especially with the schedule they played and only four home games). Hopefully they finish up strong.

Beat Fordham!!!

Listened to the radio show this Thursday to see what the Coach was saying about the Fordham game. The safety Hardegree was on, good kid and good football player. He put some numbers up last year for not being a starter and had a tough break with an injury for two and half games. Looking to see him making some plays. Wilkins showed us he is still a power house last week. Don't know why with Holland out he isn't being utilized to help Keyon with getting some more rushing yards. I agree about Melville, the last two games hasn't been his best. Not sure about this particular game, but we ought to see what the backup QB's can do. Let's beat Fordham today!!!!

Holland is out for the year with a PCL knee injury.
On another topic, last night the Maroon Council put on a great event at the New York Yacht Club last night.  They showed a tape of Coach Hunt and Dan Hurwitz, the chairman of the Bd. of Trustees.  His talk was the most positive and encouraging that I have heard in years.  He spoke of the search process of recruiting President Casey.  He said they began with an examination of the process that has led to some big mistakes in the past.  He added that they wanted someone who understood Colgate unusual combination of first rate academics, in a liberal arts setting, and Division I athletics.
They have junked some of the past plans so that Casey can have a clean slate.  He added that Casey has cleaned house of the hires made by Herbst.  A lot to be optimistic about, I think.

Good job last Indian

With Casey and Hurwitz leading the charge I am very optimistic long term.  As for short term: Beat Fordham!
Lennie

He has good receivers, if only Melville could throw a pass.  Colgate defense solid until they go into their famous prevent defense - then .......

Once again we didn't hold a lead in the 2nd half. Coming out of the break we had things going our way, but the Rams just marched down the field with almost no 'Gate D in their way. Then their WR makes an unbelievable catch at the back of the end zone...geez. Missing the extra point earlier looked critical as the clock ran down but in the final analysis it didn't factor into the loss. Question: why would we send Washington up the middle on that last drive with time running out?? Seemed like a wasted play to me. Air it out, go for the pass downfield.

So now we are 3-5 with 2 games to go. I would ordinarily say we have a .500 record in the bag, but from what I saw today I hesitate to make a prediction. Any thoughts of a PL title tie were crushed today. The next two games are for pride.

Out coached

The play calling in the second half was horrible and resembled the ineffective performance in the second half at Lehigh. Run up the middle and if that doesn't work, run up the middle. Our offensive line has problems. No holes, no push and an inability to provide adequate protection for the QB. Why do we stink in the second half of games. We used to own the last 2 quarters, controlling the line of scrimmage and wearing down the defense.
That brand of Colgate football is gone?  Can we get it back?

The season has had a cloud over it since Day 1 and the home schedule this year was uninspiring.  The OOC games are impressive but haven't gotten us anywhere.  The conference as a whole still feels behind the 8-ball; only Lehigh is ranked in the top 25 and no other PL team is receiving votes.  There is no reason not to play some other QBs against lackluster Lafayette and Gtown, unless Coach feels he owes it to Melville.  Seems odd that his senior year was his least successful.

The amazing win at JMU with a tremendous QB feels like a lifetime ago.  Would feel worse had Bucknell won today.  Can never rely on other teams to do your dirty work for you.  Still think a 5-5 season is worth playing for, these guys work damn hard.  Guess we know what Hunt will be recruiting for next year.
Go...'gate

Every season is its own journey, and this one is no different.

I do believe we can finish 5-5 (interestingly, the last time Colgate had such a record, it had a couple of guys named Parr and VanEeghen in the backfield (1973))

I don't think adding another home game would have made a difference.
CR(colorlessraider)

Yes, play calling shows no imagination at all.  Melville is not up to past years-especially passing which is not good.  Will Coach Hunt make changes?
The Future

Defense played very well. Fordham rushed 38 times for 65 yards. That's 1.7 yards a carry. They had 328 yards of total offense. Fordham's last TD was just a very good play. Colgate unlucky on the fumble/personal foul call that would have given Colgate the ball on the Fordham 15 or so-felt like that would have been the game. No idea what happened, but a few big plays was the difference.

Each team's defensive line did a very good job. Colgate's rushing totals a little bit misleading with Colgate getting three big runs. Colgate had very few five yard runs. A lot of one yard gains and then a few home run balls. For the most part good things happened with Jake kept the ball.

Jake had a very good first half and then the big run to start the second half. Colgate was in control for most of the game--with the defense playing great. But 2-11 passing for 23 yards (with all of those yards coming on one catch) in the second half too much to overcome. Still, I think miscommunication between Maddaluna and Melville on the last pass of the game was the only thing that kept it from being a TD. Looked like a bad ball but I think it may have been a pretty perfect pass if the two had been on the same page.

Don't think there is very much of a difference between this year's team and last year's. Just a few big plays is everything. The defense has played well in most games. Wonder if the huge plays in the JMU game almost got this team off its game a bit this year--I would imagine the offense has a higher percentage of deep throws than just about any team out there. A lot of 20 yard plus attempts and you never see the thing that drives fans crazy--the five yard completion on third and nine--but for sure hard to keep the chains moving when so many passes are high risk/reward. Fordham, Cornell, Richmond. All games that easily could have been won with a few breaks.

Hope these guys keep it together and finish strong. A ton of good players on this team.

It's not just about adding a team to the home slate, but the home dates themselves.  One home game in two months is ridiculous.  Attendance for our last two home games in November may not be great.  Feels like scholarships are taking a bit longer to make an impact...that goes for the PL, too.

Great fumble recovery that needed to get points, and we didn't.  That was the game IMO.  More up-the-middle run plays with no gain on first down.  It's a set up for failure.  What has happened to Edmonds?
The Future

Edmonds is a great back. Colgate's run defense is just better. Edmonds is averaging 166 yards a game and 7.3 yards a carry. He had maybe one carry where he wasn't avoiding someone in the backfield and he was still tough to get down.

Thinking about what makes Holland so good is that he takes what is given. You never see him try to bounce it outside without a clear path. He almost never loses yards-almost always makes a cut that gets him two and then fights for two more. Was hard yesterday for guys not to try to bounce it outside with Fordham having so many in the box. When Washington did get loose yesterday, he showed really good speed. Guy is a very good player.

Always like when Colgate does flea flickers or double moves/pump fakes. Melville typically has pretty good time back there and d backs are so ready to come up to support the run.

Is it official that Holland was given a red shirt this season?  Excited for next year's QBs; like McCarney, Melville and others, good things will happen with Attwood, Scarfone, Ferrari, Rothman (didn't know we had that many lol).  First extra point missed by Bowman this season; tipped, I think.
CR(colorlessraider)

Let's try Attwood now.

Lennie

Yes, let's try a couple of them. Let's try to go up the middle with a small tailback less often and let's limit the prevent defense only to special times.  Let's get after the other team's QB more often. Colgate has some very special defensive players.

Defense

I don't think we ever stopped trying to get the their QB, but D-lineman get tried in the second half. Especially when the offense can't engineer long time consuming drives, giving the defense a nice blow. As I said above, we don't have a dominant offensive line that can get that done. So many 2nd down with 8 not 2nd and 4 or 5.
CR(colorlessraider)

Play calling will be the key to how we do the next two weekends.

LC

And pressure on the QB.  They can't run and the Leopards know it, so they will throw and throw.  They have good receivers, so we'd better disrupt the QB.
