Mens Hockey 2016-2017

If not for Charlie Finn's record breaking performance in net last night we could have lost big time against Princeton. The 4-3 win with Andrew Black scoring the winning goal in the third period saw the Raiders badly outshot, 50-38. Finn made 47 saves for his 50th career win. Charlie is just the 5th goalie to get to 50 career wins.

I was at the Princeton game, my first in the new arena. It is really great. Not a bad seat in the place, clear attention to detail, lots of standing room if it is ever needed, and I could go on. Could lower the volume on the horn for first timers though  Shocked

Just wondering, we haven't signed on any new hockey recruits in 3-4 months. If we're out of schollies for a year or two maybe I can understand. I look at new recruit sites every day and other schools like Harvard, Q-Pac, Clarkson etc are adding recruits weekly, some not coming to school for three or four years, so are we behind the eightball for recruiting, is Harder the main recruiter ?
We get eighteen total, right ?(scholarships)

I noticed this too Zappa. What's going on?  Guys, beat the Friars tonight! (Haven't  seen you at any games yet   Wink

1-1 after the first period vs. Cornell.  First time watching the feed, much better visually versus last year (not surprising in the new rink with better lights).  Getting outshot as usual, too many penalties as usual, Finn playing well (also as is becoming usual).

Also saw Point on the bench and found out he played versus Providence so his mono is obviously gone, which is very good news.  Getting him some starts and Finn some rest will be key as we build towards the next couple of years.
Gate'83

So posting here to get my pal CR back on track.  I read over on USCHO that we have a bunch of guys out with the flu or food poisoning which if true makes our bench impossibly short.  Hopefully they recover some tonight, Princeton while improved is still a potential W...

CR, I'm not ready to fire the coach here yet either.  Young team we knew would struggle, last year was the really disappointing one.  People who know more than I do think this team will trend up with experience, and next year's recruits are supposed to be good.  We'll see, but it's definitely a down period that make it fair to wonder about DV's future...
CR(colorlessraider)

DV may be a bit tired after 27 years.

Gate'83,
Long time no hear.
But that's where the sympathy stops.
Cut out the reasoned, factual and balanced assessments, OK?!?
Jeezz.
Go 'gate!

Steve, CR, Zap (and others), Happy New Year!  Haven't paid much attention to the winter teams for awhile, but heading back to Hammy next Friday & staying all week to root them on.  Nothing better than a week in CNY in January.  Zap, I'll see you at the rink!
Zappa

You will, been way too long.

Word is that Point played well last night despite the tie. I believe he faced about 50 shots against P'ton earlier in the season when we beat them at '65 Arena. Good that he's getting some experience since he will be the face of the franchise the next few years. Let's hope we have a bunch of good recruits to complement him and this years frosh.

Great game by Finn last night preserved a 3-2 win over Clarkson. Team is showing improvement. Experience facing the good teams, like Clarkson, will give them confidence and the ability to possibly get a home playoff game and maybe even a series win against the top four.
Gate'83

Nice win last night for the guys... first game all year where I thought we should've won by more.  Dominated the first two periods then held on in the 3rd.  Finn was great again, only goal he gave up was on a screen where he didn't see the shot.  Made a ridiculous save a minute or two later that had the Dartmouth shooter holding his head.  Hoping for the sweep, but great to see the team starting to win some of these close ones!

Zappa, you getting your butt off the couch tonight?
Gate'83

CR, this is your string for the men's team!  Though things are a little different since the Cornell debacle on Tuesday.  The game Friday night was lucky... our winning goal was a squibber that trickled in... this afternoon also seemed a little fluky, last couple of goals were Yale mistakes as much as anything else.  Still 4 points for the weekend, let's take it!

The sweep means it's still possible (though unlikely) that we could get a home first round playoff series if things go right the next couple of weekends.  I'd say we need at least 5 of the remaining 8 points to have a chance, the way things have gone this year who knows?
Gate'83

A little press from USCHO, which doesn't happen often... plenty of quotes from coach in the article as well.

http://www.uscho.com/2017/02/16/c...r-guys-with-wins-over-brown-yale/

And borrowing a few stats from my friend Zappa on the USCHO forum page, with a young team things aren't as bleak as you might think:

Last eight games 4-4
Last 10 Games 4-5-1
Scoring first 5-2-4
Leading after one 3-0-4
Leading after two 3-0-4
Opp scores first 3-15-4
Home 6-5-3 Very surprised we have a winning home record

Let's get the early goal Friday night...

Only 1 point up north this weekend. Who'd a thought it would come against nationally ranked St. Lawrence? It would be nice to get 4 points on the last weekend and Senior Night, at home vs. RPI and Union. It will be a tough slog with Union ranked #3 or #4.  We need some points to get into 8th place and a home series. I believe we are in 9th now, just behind Dartmouth and Yale.
60salum

Crushing 4-3 loss to #7 Union tonight in OT. We needed those two points desperatly to secure a home series in the first round. Not sure a win in tomorrow's RPI Senior Night game will help us much. Looks like we will be on the road to start the post-season.
Gate'83

Still can get to 8th, need Princeton and Dartmouth losses plus winning our game vs. RPI.  That would get us to a tie with Princeton for 8th & we hold the tiebreaker based on head to head.  Unlikely, but possible...

Last night was a great game.  The loss really hurt, but to be in overtime with a top ten team?  That wasn't happening earlier this year.  Hopefully the growth this season points to bigger things than worrying about a first round home series in the future!
60salum

Big series tonight at Princeton to extend the season. The Tigers are playing great and will be a tough out. If we play some good D and get Finn or Point to be on their game, it is possible we could come away winners. I predict a 3-game series.
Steve

Great win for Kulevich, the team and coaches over Princeton last night!

And kudos to John Painter's SID staff Kevin Noonan for an impressive and clean
home page now on gocolgateraiders.com showing the legacy of MHOC with the
backdrop of the Steven J. Riggs '65 Rink: 1000 wins, starting 1916, 87 seasons, 390 Don Vaughan wins.

Best of luck tonight.

Go 'gate!

Talk about heart breakers! We were 1 second from moving on last night when the Tigers tied it up and we went to OT. Ultimately Princeton won and now we have Game 3 to decide it all. It will be a huge mountain to climb but we have been resilient this season. We can win it all if we get the goaltending and some good offense early. Need to forget about this last night We're all tied up - it's even steven. There is no reason we can't win a 1-game series. We've done it during the regular season.Go 'Gate!

Bummer

Poor loss vs a not very good Tiger team. Ok, now we have a beautiful new rink. Time for a turnaround or else heads should roll. We have been in the wilderness foe a long time. Recent years have been consistently mediocre. This should be one of our showcase sports.  If we don't see results in a year or so, then there is no excuse.
60salum

I'm sure the Game 2 heart breaker got into the player's heads - there is no way it couldn't. But they never quit in Game 3, just came up just short. A bummer of a way to end the season for sure. We knew it would be a tough year, with a young team and losing so many good seniors. We need an Andy MacDonald-Austin Smith type in the pipeline if we are to climb out of the "middle of the pack" zone in the league. Hopefully next year's frosh can add some speed and goal scoring to the offense, and we can find some D-men of Kulevich's brand. Thanks Seniors for your devotion to the program, and good luck as you go forth from Hamilton...Smile

Poetic justice for Princeton!
Zappa

Starting to have concern about our hockey recruiting. One new recruit in about four months or so. Are we out of schollies for awhile ?
Who does most of our recruiting anyways ?
60salum

I thought Mike Harder and Julio Pagliaro (sp?) did all of the recruiting. From Heisenberg's website it looks like we have 8 next year and 6 in 2018. Harvard, QU, SLU and Cornell have secured recruits as far out as 2020 according to Heisenberg. We have frosh listed only through 2018. Cornell has 12 recruits listed as coming in next season. I sure hope we have more in the pipeline we aren't aware of.
CR(colorlessraider)

Anything new on recruiting?  Have we caught up with Cornell?
Zappa

We won't catchup with Cornell until we have the "Colgate Ag School".

We've added one recruit in about six months, I don't know what they're doing. Look at national champion Denver, BC, BU, Quinnipiac, Harvard etc, they have 15-20 recruits for this year. They are recruiting fourteen and fifteen year old kids from bantams and midgets to play in 2020 and 2021 already.
I thought with the new rink things might change, I guess not.
BTW, who is our chief recruiter, Vaughan,Harder, the goalie coach ? Noone seems to know.
CR(colorlessraider)

Whoever it is is not getting done.
CR(colorlessraider)

The NHL Draft

Did any of our recruits get drafted?
