The 2016 Team

Responding to Analyzer on the old board:

There are some really good players being lost but it terms of fulltime starters, you’re looking at Quazza, Weber, McCullom, and Buttermore--other guys split time with guys who are back. The hardest to replace of the four might be the only one who didn’t make all-league—Buttermore. Williams could turn out to be great but Buttermore and Diener barely left the field so it’s very hard to say (I have absolutely no inside information about anything).

As for what Colgate returns, the D line is absolutely loaded—this should be the best D line in recent memory for Colgate with four all-league guys returning to play three spots (when you include Steffen)—plus some real depth—and Obinwa comes back. Makes me wonder about moving Afriyie to ILB. He would be fine taking on blockers and can run and can obviously rush the passer. I have no idea if he is actually suited to play the position but that would put five all league guys (include Diener) in the box at the same time.

Will be interesting to see who is at OLB. Were Nix (will he be an ILB?), Wisniewski, and Caradang all hurt this year? Seems like Wisniewski and Caradang were out there early—or at least listed in the two deep and then didn’t play at the end of the year. You also have Deluliis, TJ Holl, and John Steffen, not to mention the starters—Morgan and Cairnie. (Cairnie had a great game against SHSU—I don’t know what his 40 time is but I’m not sure if Colgate has anybody at chasing down opponents—it’s like an ostrich running down a Ferrari—crazy.)

Hopefully Bridgeforth comes back strong. Wonder if they will play more press coverage with him there the way they did when he and Morgan were corners or if it is just an overall shift in defensive philosophy.

The rest of the defensive backfield should just get better. Amazing depth in general on D.

Seems like the offense should also continue to improve. Melville is such a good decision maker. Two picks in over 300 passes is pretty remarkable. It was great to see them add layers to the offense as the year went on--the QB draw, empty backfield, true option, and even a few screens really put the offense in attack mode and opened up the read option. Hunt did such a good job with this team and, listening to his interviews, I agreed with everything he said this year—such a good person to lead the program. The one thing he said that surprised me a bit was that he said they didn’t really work on mechanics with Melville—that that was something they didn’t really focus on. Seems like Melville has the offense down so well at this point that mechanics might be one of the few things to work on. Melville makes such good reads at the line and makes such good decisions about who to throw the ball too, if you could bump up his accuracy a bit the offense would be off the charts.

The O line loses a great captain/player and some really good depth but returns a ton of guys who will just get stronger and better. Hard to imagine these guys not improving.

RB remains a strength. Holland is primed to have a big year. Can’t help but wonder about putting Wilkins in at fullback for some plays. He’s a big kid and he catches the ball really well. Can see him being open a lot on play action. A good RB coming in should help with depth.

A ton of guys back at receiver. TE might be the biggest question mark on offense because Quazza has been so good for so long. Some young guys there who certainly look promising.

Kicking game should improve. No reason it shouldn’t be as good as the year before last. Don’t think Colgate missed an extra point at home-when the ball was being spotted an extra yard back to avoid the bad turf from the lacrosse goal. Maybe try that on every kick? Bowman does kick a low ball sometimes so the extra yard back might help will elevation a bit. Kid is still one of the most accurate kickers ever at Colgate.

Arminento did a great job again this year. Don’t think he had a touchback—which also probably tells you how often Colgate went for it on 4th inside the opponent’s territory.  The three star punter coming in has a chance to be the best specialist Colgate’s ever had.

Overall, this team could be great in 2016. And it will take a great team to make it as far as the 2015 team made it. The 2015 team came up big week after week.  They really couldn’t afford to lose a game for most of the season and they just kept pulling them out. I was amazed how confident I was when they were up by six with three minutes left against JMU and JMU was obviously going to score and go up by one. Even if the D had allowed a score, I felt sure that the O would answer. These guys were just clutch. What was also great about this team was how many guys stuck with it. So many seniors not getting playing time there until the end—which is pretty remarkable when you consider that they were coming off of two pretty rough years. Says a lot about the coaches and the culture that so many wanted to be a part of Colgate football.

Hope these guys get after it in the off-season. They should be ranked pretty high going into week one. A win against Syracuse (which doesn't feel that crazy at this point--especially if they put in the work) would put at or near the top of the polls and get a whole lot of people behind them.

Go 'gate!

Really good post Future. Right on!
Gate63

Really optimistic about next year. D should be a strong point again, especially the D line. Can't hurt to get back Bridgeforth and Steffen. I do hope they press a little more. SHSU exposed us with the quick passing to guys in space.

On O I hope we go with a 2 back rotation a little more. Holland the main back and Wilkins for short yardage. I don't think any of them will admit it, but rotating 3 (while helping them stay fresh) probably hurt their ability to get in a rhythm.

Like Bowman. Still unsure if I like his 'unique' pre-snap stance. Obviously he has used it since he got here so I'm not sure if it is something that actually impacts his approach to the ball or if this year his issues were somewhere else. Agree that an extra yard on all kicks would probably help him.

Armiento may be the toughest one to replace. Punters like him don't grow on trees. The new guy will definitely have a chance to play right away which was probably one of the big selling points in his recruiting.
Gate Raider

Good summary Future.  It's too bad this season's close games did not allow for some playing time by the two deep guys in the safety and corner back positions.  Obviously, game experience is valuable for the players and it helps the coaches make evaluations.  I wonder about Ives taking over for Quazza, if there isn't another TE in the pipeline.  He's a couple inches shorter but was impressive later in the season.  I'm sure he will add some weight in the off season.
The Future

63, agree with you on Armiento. Don't know if he ever shanked one. Very, very steady. Wish he could have gotten a lucky bounce or two along the way to push him over a 40 yard per punt average. Colgate could certainly use a few more Armientos. Are they the best brother combo ever at Colgate? Betcha '80 has an answer for that...

Tom and Sean McCune readily come to mind. Tom is still top-10 in career Total Offense and Sean was a 4 year starter at SS and member of the 2003 team.

Who could forget about Spencer and Warwick Ford? Combined to win 13 letters in football. Spencer from 1891-1897 and Warwick from 1891-1896.

There is also Harry (Jud) and Thomas Sullivan. They each lettered from 1910-1913.

Rae and Saville Crowther each lettered from 1923-1924.

More recently there were the Wurst brothers who combined for 7 letters from 2002-2005.

Probably many more I am forgetting.
The Future

I can't believe I forgot the Ford brothers. Really great players. And really, really horrible students.

Final Poll, 2016 Preseason Poll

From the old forum
Re: Final FCS Polls, Preseason Polls

Copying my post from the old forum to add to discussion here.

Would be nice to see us in a final poll, but the Cinderella story is that an unranked team like Colgate made it as far as they did.  As for preseason polls, they seem to add to Colgate's demise in any sport, especially hockey. Being the underdog is the best advantage there is. Next season, we won't be a surprise and any losses will be harder to accept because expectations will be higher. There are also teams knocking on the door, like Fordham (I hope Edmonds transfers), Lehigh...and Pujals will return at HC, too.  FWIW, we play Fordham and Lehigh on the road next year.

The coaches, players and fans have high expectations every year, but this year we surpassed them. Would love a repeat performance of winning a 9th PL Title, which is difficult enough, but it's asking a lot to do better in the postseason. There are still improvements to be made in terms of players' skills, esp. on defense and fg %.  Would like to reverse those Yale and Princeton outcomes, the only blemishes on a stellar season.

Any news out there re: filling the open date on 9/10??  hate to see 2 byes with the 1st coming the 2nd week of the season.
as it stands now there will not be a home game until OCTOBER and only 2 home games up to November 12th when the 3rd of only a total of 4 home games is played.
NOT the way to draw student or local interest!!!!!
The Lone Haranguer

According to AFCA, Northern Arizona and Montana State are both looking for home games on 9/10/16. No schools listed for 10/22/16. Montana State says they'll pay a guarantee.
agatefan

geez, another road game....not good!!!
this Sr class will have only 4 home games if that happens, what a shame!
60salum

Nest season's home slate is a travesty. We - and the players/seniors - deserve  better.
Gate'83

Haven't heard any news on the schedule, last I heard they were definitely looking to fill one of the bye weeks.

It's been discussed elsewhere, but remember we've got the two byes because the BOT directed athletics to get out of the home & home with Bryant (a legacy of Roach's tenure) and we do have Syracuse to start the year as a quasi-home game.  Combine that with our dreadful home attendance (Lehigh and Bucknell were especially pitiful last year, with the league championship on the line) and I don't think we've got much basis to complain.

Also of note; if you look at our history, the first year in the modern era where we had more than 4 home games was 1989, with the advent of the full PL schedule.  Prior to that 2-3 home games were common in the 60's and the first time we had as many as 4 home games was 1977.  We should not be afraid to travel!
Tunkmaster

Ironically, Bryant is playing Montana State (probably in front of 17K fans) on September 10. But, I understand Angelo State University is available on that date and is willing to travel. A home game!
Gate Raider

Join the 21st century.  It is not the 1960's any more.  That was a half century ago and back then we were playing SU and other big names almost every year.  Times have changed.  Even 1989 was 27 years ago and that is ancient history to students and many fans today..  The reason for poor attendance is because Colgate does a simply terrible job at drawing up schedules.  Last year's, this year's and next year's FB schedules are terrible.  Colgate has to get more home games earlier in the year.  You can't expect fans to come out for games in late Oct. and Nov.  when there are no home games in Sept.  For the Lehigh game there was a hockey game that night.  If Colgate wants more fans for FB they better schedule more than four home games and some of them have to be in September or early October.  It is plain stupid to think that Colgate can justify a very expensive football program at the FCS level and have only four home games a year.  With only four home games and those being late in the year 'gate will be lucky to get 300 fans in the seats and with attendance at that level the program will simply fade for lack of interest.  With four home games you can't even justify the expense of maintaining the stadium let alone the entire program.  Might as well move to D3.  BTW hockey is just as bad.  They have no or maybe one home game during spans of 8 to 10 weeks in the middle of the season.
60salum

Gate Raider   +1

I hear ya. Colgate doesn't market the home FB games as it should. I used to see posters in all the store windows in Hammy showing the schedule and particularly the home games. They need to get the word out to locals and in the geographical area, i.e. Utica, 'Cuse, Binghamton, Cazenovia, Earlville, etc.

Also why not offer a doubleheader on home Saturdays? Maybe the opening of an art exhibit at the Picker, a morning brunch on the Village Green, a concert by Pink Floyd (LOL) or a free lecture by the latest Astronomy guru? Maybe a high school music day with all the bands in the area showing up in the morning on the field for a competition - with their parents (I believe this is done in Sherburne once a year). Let's think outside the box. Staying with the status quo is getting us nowhere. The early autumn weekends in September and October are the times to boost attendance and interest that will carry over to any home games that fall in November when the weather is horrid and the leaves are off the trees. We need a schedule that plays to our geographic strengths.
Gate Raider

Tunkmaster

Curious to learn what posters think is a reasonable expectation for attendance at football games. Using NCAA statistics, the average home attendance at FCS home games in 2014 was 7,666 for 121 schools playing in FCS. The NCAA lists the top 30 attendance schools, which range from average attendance of 23,777 at Montana to 9,432 at #30 Eastern Washington. If I did the math correctly, that means the remaining 91 schools average home attendance is just over 5,800. Going back to 2003, the NCAA reports that average home attendance at Patriot League schools runs about 5,500. The highest attendance year was 2014 at 5,914 and the lowest was 5,285 in 2006. By the way, out of the top 30 in 2014, only three schools are in the northeast: Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

2016 Patsy Ratings

2016 Patsy Ratings have the Raiders recruiting class 5th in the PL.  Have to admit I was just as surprised at the lack of star-rated power on our recruit list.

Then again, look where they had us last year  Laughing

2015                                     ACTUAL:
NO. 1 - FORDHAM - 88            COLGATE
NO. 2 - BUCKNELL - 85           FORDHAM
NO. 3 - GEORGETOWN - 82     LEHIGH
NO. 4 - LEHIGH - 72               HOLY CROSS
NO. 5 - LAFAYETTE - 64          GEORGETOWN
NO. 6 - HOLY CROSS - 58        BUCKNELL
NO. 7 - COLGATE - 55             LAFAYETTE

2016 updates can be found HERE.  Colgate with a mere 47 points.  Would be unfortunate to follow up a tremendous season with those paltry numbers.

the patsy ratings which are appreciated but more for off season entertainment than anything else do NOT attempt to predict the coming seasons standings, they are simply an unofficial ranking of incoming freshman classes which in no way is a pre cursor for how the league will finish in the coming season

look back at the Sr & Jr class if you care to judge the 2015 season results vs the patsy ratings.

Patsys are not intended to be predictive nor are thry. The ratings have historically very litlle correlation to future individial success. We"ve all had 2* recruits that never saw the field and All PL unrated players.. Over the years, the higher rated classes have been more successful 3-4 yrs later. Time will tell whether that will continue in the schollie era.

Every reason for extreme optimism going into this season.  (I wish I could say the same for our Lafayette Leopards.)  If I may, I'd like to go back in time.
My dad, a '38 Brown grad always considered Colgate to be their main rival and, in 1932, that rivalry reached its pinnacle.  Both teams went into the last game undefeated and untied.  Colgate--incredibly--was unscored upon.  While Brown almost scored to end the first half, they met the same fate.   Colgate won 21-0 and expected to go to the Rose Bowl.  Sadly, Pittsburgh went  and was white-washed by USC.
Victories over Lafayette, NYU at Yankee Stadium, Penn State, Syracuse et al.  My dad must have mentioned that "undefeated, untied, unscored upon, and UNINVITED" team a thousand times.  Fun memory.
(On google, it is said that the name RED Raiders came from that team wearing maroon uniforms.)
Raider Archivist

The Colgate-Brown game at one time was a big deal, played annually before Thanksgiving.

The historic relationship between Colgate and Brown was catalyzed by their common origin from the Baptist denomination.
Colgate was founded as the "Baptist Education Society" and initially was a theological seminary. William Colgate was a trustee of the Baptist Education Society.

"The College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations," now known as Brown University, also began as a Baptist institution
Zappa

As a kid growing up in Hamilton I always had the treat of watching Colgate vs Brown on tv every Thanksgiving. It was always in Providence and usually started around 11 am I believe.

Thanks for sharing Zappa.

I believe it's valuable to document all of the threads that make up the interesting tapestry of all aspects of Colgate history.

The Colgate football history in particular is especially important to us "geezers."

On Mooney, I have absolutely no idea why he left other than he seemed to be in the wrong system. I think he could be a good college QB, but maybe in one that wasn't so dependent on the read option.

Wish Colgate was putting out some interviews with players. The videos they are producing are high quality and set a great tone but there has been very little info on football at this point.

Here is a new preview. One of the things that stands out is that freshman Abu Daramy is listed in the "other key players" section. Wonder if he replaces Washington on D. Would think Bridgeforth and Castillo are starting at corner.

There was a very informative letter from Kylr Deiner about the team.  I believe it is sent to Maroon Council members. Call Debby Rhyde  at 315-228-7603 to ask.  It cites some standout players.  I have heard there is a real tight race for backup qb between Attwood and the first year qb from Florida.  I expect there will be a two deep out later this week.  The only serious injury I heard about was a frosh Rb broke his leg.  That info is a little stale so stay tuned.  Go 'Gate!
The Future

Thanks for the info, CR. Didn't get the Deiner letter (and am Maroon Council). Will ask Debby about it. Interesting about QB's. Seems like a good thing. Too bad about freshman RB. Need Holland to stay healthy. Really curious to see how this team comes out against Syracuse. Feel like they were a bit tentative against Sam Houston and that hurt them. Hope they don't have too much respect for Syracuse's speed and get after them a bit.

Don't think it is for Maroon Council specifically, just a distribution list maintained by the players. Started with Jimmy DeCicco a few years ago, the. Nikko Armiento took over, now done by Deiner.

Syracuse

Yes this board has been dead since we switched from the voy board after getting razzed about it from a Sam Houston trash talker. The registration and set-up do not lend to encouraging participation.

I'm surprised at the optimism on AGS over the prospects of 'gate playing a close game against Syracuse. I'll be watching and hoping for one, but I think fans need to be realistic. Syracuse is a cut above the service academies (Navy last year being an exception which proves the rule), Buffalo, Ball State, and even Rutgers (at least when we were playing them). Sure they had an 8-game losing streak last year, but that streak included 10-point losses to top-5 Clemson and LSU. They are truly a major I-A program. I thought we played a great game a few years ago when we lost 42-7 (and were screwed out of 14 points by the refs). Anything within 3 TDs would be easily beating the spread and be a very acceptable result. I'm not trying to be a downer and am thrilled we are playing the Orange again, but just don't think we should be calling for Hunt's head or a new QB if we get blown out.

I think if you look back at the old board you'll see '63 started a thread about setting up a new board that he had been contemplating for some time... don't think the trash talk was the principal driver, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

You're certainly right that the new board has been less active than the old one, which is too bad... hoping it picks up when the season starts.   And if we get out of Syracuse having played competitively and with no major injuries, anything else is gravy!

True, this is actually my 2nd attempt at a new board. I always had it on the back burner to give it another go and finally looked into free options more seriously when the Sam Houston guy offered to fund one for us for a year. This forum has been much better, at least from my point of view. There has only been one spam user/post on this board that I had to delete vs a daily process of deleting spam from the old Voy. I also like the feature of being alerted when someone replies to your message. I'll be answering some questions for Syracuse's SBNation website in the coming days and will plug this forum to try and drive some conversation for everyone.
The Future

This board looks and functions very well--Ryan was right to change it. That being said, I think the registration part inhibits the inciting posters that are in someways the lifeblood of this place. Nothing rallies the 'gaters more than having Punky Brewster (who is obviously Professor Aveni) set loose the day after a close win over Sacred Heart.

Here is another great video from Colgate FB's Twitter:

Punky Aveni!

Ha! Aveni as Punky Brewster, that's a good one! Whatever happened to Punky, Chenango Sam, Will E Coyote, and several others (who all may have been the same person as far as I know) who routinely trashed Colgate sports and celebrated our defeats? They disappeared a couple of years ago on the old voy forum, and I presume were not banned. Though aggravating, they did have knowledge of Colgate athletics and stimulated conversation.

I can't argue with anything said about the look, function, and advantages of this new board. Perhaps it is an illusion since every post is not seen on the main page, but it seems like there is far, far less activity on this board. I can't believe we are playing Syracuse in a week, after we dominated a team in a win last December that was within a TD of Syracuse according to the Sagarin ratings (and that was AFTER our win), and this board is so dead. This is a discussion forum after all. Maybe all the bells and whistles that make it look so good are like the attractive packaging on dog food that dogs don't like to eat.

Traffic is lighter

But I still enjoy the board and  get some scoops from time to time.  I can't make the Syracuse game but will use Apple TV to see it on the big screen.  I think we can beat the spread if not win.  Should be an exciting season since I think all teams will be improved.  We shall see.  In the meantime talk to fellow alums about joining the Maroon Council which supports football financially.  Call 315-228-7603 for instructions.  Go 'Gate!
