Very likeable....yes. Up to the challenge.....hmmmm ?

The only thing surprising here is the question of what kind of winning expectations ( over 5 years ? 10 years ? ) new coach hires are given and how the Colgate Athletic Administration evaluates progress in reaching its goals for the Program?  This program really hasn't looked like it's going anyplace.

Nicci's accomplishent was in not penetrating the lows established by her predecessor, Pam Bass. A stabilization ? Perhaps. And a great PR job ! But, it took an extraordinary effort in the Colgate community, several complete staff turnovers and a strong recruiting effort with little to show for it and not much to expect from the girls remaining and coming in next year..

Nicci and her husband's sacrifices, after they both left DePaul for Nicci's Gate job. include not living together regularly. Her husband took Development jobs in NY state colleges that are hours away.

New hires at American and Bucknell, hired after Nicci, have had extraordinary success in a shorter time. Colgate is a tough assignment. But, like Nicci, others willing to take the Gate WBB H.C. challenge may not be equipped to be successful as a Head Coach at Gate or anywhere else in DI, for that matter.

Very sorry to hear this news. Nicci is an upstanding person and coach. Things didn't work out for her at 'Gate, but I wish her all the success in the world going forward. Hope she is able to catch on to a good coaching position and be successful in any path she takes.

Mic I added much to the Colgate community with her upbeat personality.  It is too bad that didn't translate into good basketball.  All the best to her down the road.

For all of her redeeming qualities, I was beginning to feel that Nicci really was over her head. There are some very good coaches in PL WBB, and they're getting better ones with each replacement. The wording of Vickie's announcement sounds more like Nicci was let go, and/or that they had been discussing for some time that a fork in the road was coming?

Vickie:
"We would like to thank Nicci for her five years of service as head coach," said Colgate Vice President and Director of Athletics Victoria M. Chun '91 MA'94. "We wish her well and thank her for all she has contributed to the women's basketball program, to the university, and to the community."

Very disappointed, for many reasons.  She looked, sounded, and acted like a quality coach from Day One.  She loved Colgate.  She was young and motivated.  She had a good resume.  What more could you ask for?  Unfortunately, Colgate hires the new and (relatively) untested; a stepping stone at times.

I am guessing her contract was up.  There is much reading between the lines to be done.  This could have been more of an administrative decision.  Nicci was also becoming damaged goods.  With her record - and perhaps more of the same for the next several years - her (potential) coaching career at other institutions would be in serious jeopardy.

Decisions are made (respectfully, I presume) behind closed doors, but we are left to speculate.  What I would give to know from Nicci after all is said and done:

What makes Colgate a challenge to succeed?
Why are similar schools more successful?
Is anything lacking in the facilities or administration that have hindered you or the program's success?

I am confident she will land on her feet.  Her husband is at Hartick College in Oneonta; perhaps she can fill a need there.

Dare I say that a male coach could make a difference?

I'm conjecturing. But, I think this was at least a collaborative
( administration not providing incentives for her to stay ) decision, for all of the reasons 'gogate cited. For all of her dedication, Nicci didn't get the job done with the "w's." Her scheduling didn't accomplish much in recruiting. I've watched this team closely...she's had at least one dud recruit in each class. She got lucky with Josie as a referral and had some bad luck with injuries. But, as I stated elsewhere on this board late last year,, her lack of success was becoming a sore thumb relative to the other six young Gate coaches hired over the past five years. The success of WHOC this year and the new facility next year couldn't be more daunting/intimidating for someone with her track record and trajectory coaching WBB at Gate for the next couple of years. Time to move on! Not much to lose! Makes sense for everybody!

In the end, she gets the same fate as Pam Bass.  Nicci deserved better.  Not often you see UCONN come to Hamilton.  Hope she will remember that as a bright spot from her time at Colgate for years to come.  Also hope there are no hard feelings, but we will never know.

Maybe Vicky is tougher than we thought.

She may well deserve better - but she really didn't have anything to do with UConn coming to Hamilton, other than saying yes when Geno asked.  Should have been an easy decision.   You can mostly thank Quentin Hillsman for the game.

We all know she had nothing to do with scheduling that game, but not many from the PL can say they've played a team like that - ever - and at home, nonetheless.

Hold on... we were only on Geno's radar because he knew Nicci as Doug Bruno's assistant at Depaul.  Remember that we went to UConn a couple of years back and that had much more to do with the Nicci/Geno relationship than it did with the Herbsts (UConn parents I know say the sister is as bad as the brother, by the way).  Yes we were convenient for Brianna's senior game, but I'd imagine Geno's familiarity with Nicci had something to do with the scheduling, otherwise the Huskies would've been playing LeMoyne.
