Zappa,

My sense right now is that this as good a place as any to express my sadness and shock at Mike's passing. I just spoke with Vicky Stone of the Alumni Office and everyone is heartbroken. I see that she sent out an email bulletin a couple of hours ago about this- as prepared by Bob Tyburski.

What more can anyone say?

Same here.  He was a good guy and a great Colgate supporter.  I communicated with Patty Caprio and she is devastated.  He was well liked and married to a local gal.

Got the news while still in Hamilton, as has been mentioned it was a big shock.  I got to know Mike quite well the last few years, particularly through 7 Oaks... what a great guy, and a big loss for both the University and the local community.  Anyone interested in remembering Mike, here's the info on where to direct your donations:

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Colgate University and directed to the Michael S. '69 and Mary Catherine Martin Scholarship Fund, c/o Colgate University, 13 Oak Drive, Hamilton, NY 13346, or to the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation, 150 Broad Street, Hamilton, NY 13346.

An article from 2009 about Mike:

Michael S. Martin ’69

Before Reunion Weekend is over, drop by Merrill House and take a look at the dining room walls. They tell the story of frontiersmen and women carving this campus out of a western wilderness. Two centuries later, the outfits are more comfortable, the tools more efficient, but pioneers like Mike Martin are still laying foundations for Colgate’s success.

When Mike first entered the Chenango Valley, he was a Phi Kappa Psi, a New York Regents scholar, an anthropology major, and as a member of the town-gown committee, he took his duty to improve university-village relations to new heights by marrying Hamilton resident Mary Catherine.

Mike’s heart stayed on the hill even as he moved his family south, built a successful career with AXA Financial where he retired as Executive VP and managing director, served as a district alumni club president, a member of his class gift committee and the Presidents’ Club Membership Committee.

Eventually, Mike returned and constructed a second home on the edge of Seven Oaks Golf Course. While putting down roots in Hamilton, he took up a place on the university’s board of trustees and helped lay out a revolutionary new plan for residential education at
Martin — townhouses, theme houses, Greek houses, that would combine tradition with opportunity and extend the university’s lead in liberal arts education.

Ever a voice of confidence, Mike served as president of the alumni council, delivered multiple presentations to the student body, participated in Real World and Reunion College, provided job referrals and career advising, and reunited his Phi Psi brothers around the old fraternity juke box, which lives in his basement.

Mike entrusted his children, Derek ’92, Jeremy ’95, and Emily ’99, to Colgate. And while you’re calculating the tuition payments, keep in mind that he is an active member of the Presidents’ Club, the Passion for the Climb Steering Committee, Campaign Executive Committee, Planned Giving Committee, Regional Campaign Committee, Reunion Gift Committee and continues to work on behalf of the local community by serving as vice-chair of the Hamilton Initiative. You can see why Mike received a Maroon Citation in 1994.

Samuel Payne sold us land; Daniel Hascall built West Hall. But Mike Martin, with calm determination, gave students the encouragement and infrastructure they need to live a meaningful life, 24-7.

In lieu of a picture, we are honoring him with the Wm. Brian Little Award for Distinguished Service.
