More gloom and doom.  The team set a record for a poor start.  Langel will have grey hair before you know it.

Unlike other alums attracted to former Coach Nicci Hays Fort's public persona and dedication to Colgate, I actually watched a lot of Gate WBB from the beginning of Nicco's regime through Bill Cleary's first year. I grew skeptical about two aspects of her program: game preparation/in-game adjusrments and the regular turnover of her staff.

Although it's too early to pass judgment on his staff, Cleary is a vast improvement in the coaching issues identified. Although his wins are ostensibly a modest improvement from last year, his team played with poise, confidence and was rarely "out of it" in their rigorous 30 game schedule. This in itself, was a significant improvement over past seasons. Boding well for  future seasons is the stellar frosih class led by PL All-Rookie Rachel Thompson. ( She's a special multi-skilled guard who is entertaining to watch. The nucleus for future teams, her intensity is contagious.) But injuries kept 3 significant players out of the rotation for almost the entire year. Cleary was very resourceful in getting the most out of his depleted 10 woman roster. Everybody got playing time in almost every game.

Cleary will have to prve himself as a recruiter. He'll need, at a minimum, 2 or 3 quality recruiting classes who successfully assimilate his system before the program will solidify its place in the P.L.. Even with the injuries, Gate finished in 6th place after being picked for 9th at the beginning of the year. There's reason for optimism that Gate WBB can gradually improve over the next several years under Coach Cleary.

Coach Clearly has done a terrific job. I too see 2-3 years down the road a major improvement. Next year if they can cut their turnovers in half it will be a big help along with a new recruit class.  Best of luck to him and the players!

Funny you should post this today, Archivist... woke up this AM to a note from Nicci saying it was the 1 year anniversary of her "separation" from Colgate.  Plenty of ups & downs in the last year, but she couldn't be happier with her current situation.  For those who haven't followed, she's an assistant coach for the nationally ranked Drake Bulldogs, the #1 seed in the Missouri Valley and on a 20 game win streak.  Hope they win the MVC tournament & end up upsetting UConn in the NCAA's!

My annual review; I found without the personal connection to the coach I didn't pay nearly the same attention to women's hoop this year.  Didn't watch any of the games on the computer though I still went (3 games) when I was in Hammy & they were home.  From what I saw the ball moved with more of a purpose & coach Cleary's sideline presence was very good.  Wish I had seen a win...

I'd also say that the last game I was at vs. Bucknell the talent disparity was so great that no in-game coaching was going to fix it.  And we all know when he's out recruiting he's still selling a team with zero history in a crappy gym that won 10 games... not easy.  So I'm hoping he's as good a recruiter as he seemed to be a sideline coach, we'll need both elements to become successful!
